When former residents stop Kynadi Jones on campus just to say hello, she's reminded of something powerful: even small actions can create lasting impact. This simple truth has guided the University of Texas at Austin rising senior through an extraordinary college journey marked by academic excellence, transformative leadership, and an unwavering commitment to social change.

Majoring in Psychology, minoring in entrepreneurship, and pursuing a certificate in Criminal Law, Justice, and Inequality, Kynadi has distinguished herself as both a scholar and changemaker. A consistent presence on the College of Liberal Arts Dean’s Honor List and recognized as a College Scholar, she balances a rigorous academic schedule with multiple campus and community roles. She serves as a research assistant and resident assistant. Off campus, she is also volunteering with The Lemonade Circle, a San Antonio-based nonprofit that empowers girls of color, and works as a marketing and social media specialist for Rejuvenate Psychological Services in Austin.
Bridging Disciplines, Building Impact
Through the Bridging Disciplines Programs (BDP), Kynadi has expanded her academic focus by exploring the intersections of psychology, law, and social justice. During her junior year, she presented two interdisciplinary research projects: one examining interventions for children with incarcerated parents through the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates at Ohio University, and another proposing policy changes to California’s Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS) to promote racial equity in early childhood education.
These projects reflect her commitment to addressing systemic inequities affecting vulnerable children—research that bridges academic theory with practical solutions for communities in need.
“The BDPs allowed me to connect fields from different disciplines and to explore different career paths,” she says. “It’s helped me see how psychology, policy, and social justice intersect.”
Leading With Purpose
Now entering her third year as a Resident Assistant, Kynadi has spent two of those years supporting the Catalyst Living Learning Community, which focuses on leadership and social change. The role has been both personally meaningful and professionally transformative, allowing her to mentor dozens of students while developing essential leadership skills.
“Sometimes I’m the floor mom, other times I’m a friend,” she reflects. “What stays with me most is when former residents stop me on campus just to say hi and knowing that I contributed positively to their college experience.”
Her leadership extends beyond the residence halls. Within the Association of Black Psychologists, she has served as Community Engagement Chair, Treasurer, and Vice President. Additionally, she advocates for student mental health access as a representative in UT’s Student Government Mental Health Agency.
Creating Balance
Balancing academics, leadership, and community involvement is no small task, but Kynadi attributes her ability to staying grounded to a strong sense of purpose and intentional self-care. She makes time for the activities that bring her joy like spending time in nature, hiking, making art, reading, and staying connected with loved ones.
For new students looking to find their place at UT, she shares simple but meaningful advice: “Start by being kind. Making a positive impact starts with just one person.”
Looking Forward
Social change, to Kynadi, means "caring deeply about people regardless of their differences and being motivated to create a positive impact." Her future goals reflect this philosophy: she plans to create programs that support children of color within educational settings while addressing the impact of systemic barriers, offering safe, inclusive spaces where they can thrive.
Kynadi Jones exemplifies what it means to lead with empathy, determination, and vision—qualities that will undoubtedly shape her continued journey long after her time at UT.
