William Powers led a long and impressive career at The University of Texas at Austin, starting as a member of the UT law faculty in 1977. In 1997 he was recognized for outstanding teaching by being inducted into the prestigious Academy of Distinguished Teachers. He served as dean of the School of Law, and then as president of the university from 2006 until 2015.
On Wednesday, March 6, the School of Undergraduate Studies (UGS) held a banquet to celebrate students in the top 4% of their class. All 119 students on the UGS Dean’s List made a GPA of 4.0 during spring or fall 2018.
More than 100 peer educators and mentors recently gathered in the Learning Commons of the Perry Castañeda Library for the second annual Leading & Learning Student Educator Forum sponsored by the Sanger Learning Center and BeVocal.

With so many options, how can you know you’re making the right decision if you haven’t had much experience with a major’s subject matter? Interdisciplinary Studies Week (ISW) allows students in the School of Undergraduate Studies (UGS) to take a major for a test drive.
Three Signature Course professors have won the 2018-19 President’s Associates Teaching Excellence Awards. Minette “Meme” Drumwright, Shannon Cavanagh, and James Patton were recognized for their outstanding undergraduate teaching in the core curriculum. This year, all of the nominees put forth by the School of Undergraduate Studies were chosen to receive the award. Each professor receives an honorarium of $5,000, funds contributed by friends of the university dedicated to high-quality educational instruction.
Signature Course professor Erika Bsumek has collaborated with a University of Texas at Austin laboratory to create a new way for students to visualize history. Bsumek worked with UT’s Simulation and Game Applications Lab and developer Matt O’Hair to produce an online, interactive, timeline tool called ClioVis: Visualizing Historical Connections.
As of February 1, Rey Ramos is the new director of the Vick Center for Strategic Advising & Career Counseling.
