Job Opportunities at the Sanger Learning Center

We are not currently hiring. Please check back in March for open positions. This page currently provides a list of the positions we employ students in each year.

Most positions offer flexible work hours and opportunities to work remotely. Plus, you can combine more than one Sanger position for up to 20 hours per week. All of our positions are work-study eligible.

Tutor

Hours: Must be available eight hours a week; more hours possible based on demand.
Starting rate: $14/hour
Requirements: Must be enrolled as a full-time student

Tutors at the Sanger Learning provide free one-to-one tutoring by appointment for many lower-division courses, as well as drop-in tutoring for mathematics, physics, and chemistry. This challenging position offers flexible hours and the satisfaction that comes from helping other students achieve their academic goals. Tutors must be knowledgeable in the content of the courses they tutor (have earned a B or higher), have effective listening and communication skills, and respect differences in individuals and their academic backgrounds. Applicants must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours and be available for at least 8 hours per week, with up to 19 hours possible if desired, based on demand.

Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders (Multiple disciplines)

Hours: 10 hours per week (six hours per week for BIO)
Starting rate: $14/hour
Requirements: Any full-time UT Austin student who has taken all of the prerequisite courses
Preferences: Students who have received at least a B in the course they support (see here for a list of currently SI-supported courses).

A Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader is an undergraduate student who is assigned to a specific course and facilitates two to three identical 50-minute sessions a week. SI Leaders (except biology) attend the lecture of the course to which they are assigned, plan and conduct their sessions using collaborative activities to combine course content with effective study strategies, and meet weekly as a group to collaborate on planning and troubleshooting their sessions. Qualified applicants can be any full-time UT student who has taken all of the prerequisites and preferences are given to those who have received at least a B in the course they support (see here for a list of currently SI-supported courses).

SI leaders work approximately 10 hours per week: three hours of attending class, two hours of planning sessions, two to three hours of facilitating identical SI sessions (depending on the course), one hour of a weekly cohort meeting, and one hour of administrative tasks.

The Supplemental Instruction program is dedicated to being a program that is open to all students. This position and the program value those who can provide compassionate facilitation and leadership to their peers.

Outreach and Communication Specialist

Hours/Salary: 8-15 hours per week, based on demand
Starting rate: $14/hour
Requirements: Enrolled in at least 12 credit hours

Outreach and Communication Specialists (OCS) are the voice of the Sanger Learning Center across campus. Outreach and Communication Specialists are trained and informed public speakers who facilitate study skills and time management workshops for FIGs, classes, residence halls, and student organizations. They also assist Sanger Learning Center by giving short informational presentations and contribute to marketing efforts at campus-wide events. This position features a flexible schedule week to week, valuable networking, and ongoing professional development. An ideal candidate will have sound communication skills, exceptional customer service, strong organizational skills, and a vested interest in helping students succeed on the 40 Acres. Senior Outreach and Communication Specialist

Hours/Salary: 8-15 hours per week
Starting rate $14/hour
Requirements: Enrolled in at least 12 credit hours

Senior Outreach and Communication Specialists assist students in all aspects of the speech preparation and rehearsal process, including preparing speaker notes, using visual aids, and improving nonverbal and vocal delivery. They provide one-on-one and small group consultations in the Public Speaking Center, located in JES. Senior Outreach and Communication Specialists also fulfill requests to promote the Public Speaking Center on behalf of the Sanger Learning Center. Hiring priority is given to current student-educators, students with education experience, and students with experience speaking in public. Pre-semester training is required as are one-hour weekly meetings.

Peer Academic Coach

Hours/Salary: 5-10 flexible hours per week, based on demand
Starting rate: $14/hour
Requirements: Must be available in person from 5-6 p.m. on Thursdays for weekly meetings and attend virtual pre-service training. Must have been at UT for at least two semesters and plan to enroll as a full-time student.

Peer Academic Coaches take private appointments with any student interested in guidance on how to plan and study effectively for UT courses. They must respect differences in individual learners and academic backgrounds plus have effective listening and collaboration skills.

Coaching occurs in two formats: a) a long version in which coaches work with the same students weekly for the duration of the semester and b) a short version in which coaches post one-hour appointments on single topics to be claimed by interested students. Common appointment topics include preparing for tests, test-taking strategies, planning and time management, improving concentration, adapting to online courses, reading and note-taking efficiency, and motivation/procrastination. Coach training on metacognitive learning techniques is provided by professional learning specialists.

Work-Study – Student Associate

Hours: Must be available 10-15 hours per week.
Starting Rate: $14/hour
Requirements: Must have a work-study award from the Office of Financial Services and be enrolled as a full-time student

Student Associates provide customer service support in our main office (open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and our Drop-In Tutoring Center (open Monday through Thursday 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.).

They must possess strong customer service skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team in a busy environment. Student Associates act as the face of Sanger Learning Center and must become familiar with Sanger services. They should also be able to assist with administrative projects during times of low traffic.
