Texas Success Initiative (TSI)
Texas Success Initiative (TSI) at UT Austin
The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a state requirement ensuring all incoming students are assessed in math, reading, and writing. If you’re not exempt, you must take the TSI Assessment (TSIA) and submit your scores to UT Austin before attending Orientation. The TSI program has two key components:
- Assessment: Evaluates your skills in math, reading, and writing.
- Developmental Instruction: Provides support to improve areas identified by your TSIA scores.
Who We Serve
The Texas Success Initiative Office at UT Austin supports current and admitted students only. If you have TSI-related questions for another institution, please contact that institution directly.

You may already meet TSI requirements based on the information submitted in your application. Follow these steps to check your status:
- Log in to RIS and select the upcoming semester.
- Under “Registration Holds”, check for a "Texas Success Initiative" hold.
- If you see a TSI hold: You will not be able to register for courses until the hold is resolved.
- If you don’t see a TSI hold: You’ve likely fulfilled the requirements, and no further action is needed.
How to Fulfill your TSI Requirements
