Climate change is a growing crisis domestically and around the world, with minority and low-income populations suffering the greatest consequences. Many researchers and news outlets have taken notice of the environmental rollbacks perpetuated by the Trump Administration and their adverse effect on increasing air pollution nationwide. I hypothesize that environmental deregulations under the Trump Administration are related to greater proportional burdens of particulate matter on communities of color as compared to the Obama Administration. I test this hypothesis leveraging geospatial analysis of data describing the racial/ethnic makeup of counties in the United States and particulate matter pollution totals. This research speaks to the claim that environmental racism is an active threat that is being heightened under the Trump Administration.

Very clear (and important) research question. I hope you’re able to share this work even more broadly — this issue deserves more attention. —Rob Reichle
