UT McNair Scholar Awarded Prestigious Matthew W. Taylor Scholarship

The Texas TRIO Association has announced that University of Texas at Austin McNair Scholar, Orlan Oconer, has been awarded the Matthew W. Taylor Scholarship for 2024. Selected from a competitive pool of applicants, Oconer, a graduating senior majoring in aerospace engineering, has demonstrated academic excellence and commitment to research throughout his time at UT. 

Oconer’s research explores ceramic-based additive manufacturing to protect sensors from extreme temperatures in high-energy manufacturing processes. His innovative work has been supported by the McNair Scholars program, a federally funded initiative preparing first-generation, low-income students for doctoral studies. Oconer credits the McNair program for providing him with the support and resources necessary to achieve his academic and research goals.  

“Winning this award is a testament that education is for everyone, and I am a proud recipient of this scholarship. It has given me more opportunities to succeed in academia and life,” he said. 

The Matthew W. Taylor Scholarship, administered by the Texas TRIO Association, is a prestigious award that underscores the organization's commitment to advocating for TRIO programs and professionals across the state. These programs are dedicated to expanding educational opportunities and providing vital support to students.
