As of the 2010 Undergraduate Catalog, all students are required to take a Signature Course (UGS 302 or 303) to fulfill University Core requirements. If you have questions about whether you are required to take a Signature Course, please speak with the academic advisor in your department or college.
The First-Year Experience Office is here to help you with any questions or concerns you may have about registering for a Signature Course.
First-Year Students
All first-year students are required to take a Signature Course. As a first-year student, you are able to register for any Signature Course listed as 'Open' on the course schedule during your registration access periods. If you will have completed two long semesters (ex: fall and spring) by the time you will be taking your Signature Course, follow the 'Continuing Students' guidelines below. Please keep these things in mind while registering:
- View available courses and descriptions through the online course schedule.
- Courses fill quickly, so have several course options ready to try during registration!
- Unless your advisor tells you you are eligible for a course listed as 'Open; reserved', you will be unable to register for those courses.
- We do not add students to closed sections and we do not use waitlists.
- Please do not contact the professors with registration questions.
If you are still having issues registering, please email our office.
Continuing Students
If you are outside of your first year at UT Austin and still need to take a Signature Course, please email us during your first registration access period (or any time after, during registration) for assistance. In your email, be sure to include your EID and the unique numbers of three 'open' UGS 303 sections. Please keep these things in mind during registration:
- View available courses and descriptions through the online course schedule.
- We can add you to any UGS 303 listed as 'open' on the course schedule. UGS 302s and 'Open; reserved' sections are not available to continuing students.
- We do not add students to closed sections and we do not use waitlists.
- Please do not contact the professors with registration questions.

New Transfer Students
Transfer students in their first year at UT Austin may register for any UGS 302 or 303 listed as 'open' on the course schedule during their registration access periods.
