Flag Criteria

To successfully complete your Flag petition, you must demonstrate that the course meets the Flag criteria. See below for more information about the criteria and interpretation.

Cultural Diversity in the United States

At least half** of the course grade must be based on content dealing with the cultural experiences, perspectives, and/or practices of marginalized groups in the United States.

Ethics

At least one-third* of the course grade must be based on work in practical ethics, i.e., the study of what is involved in making real-life ethical choices.

Global Cultures

At least one-third* of the course grade must be based on content dealing with an in-depth examination of the broader cultural context and perspectives of one or more non-U.S. communities, countries, or coherent regional groupings of countries, past or present.

Independent Inquiry

At least one-third* of the course grade must be based on the students’ independent investigation and presentation of their own work. The presentation of their work can take place in many venues including presentations in a capstone course, a performance, independent research, or a thesis.

Quantitative Reasoning

At least one-half** of the course grade must be based on the use of high-level quantitative skills (e.g., data analysis and modeling, simulation, statistics, probability, and quantitative decision analysis) to analyze real-world problems.

Writing

  • Students must write regularly (several times during the semester) and complete writing projects that are substantial
  • Students must receive feedback from the instructor to help them improve their writing, and be given an opportunity to revise at least one assignment
  • Students’ writing must make up at least one-third* of the course grade.

*For Ethics, Global Cultures, Independent Inquiry, and Writing three- or four-credit courses. For two-credit hour courses, at least one-half of the course grade should be based on Flag content. For one-hour credit courses, the whole course grade (100%) should be based on Flag content.

**For Cultural Diversity in the United States and Quantitative Reasoning, three- or four-credit courses. For two-credit hour courses, the whole course grade (100%) should be based on Flag content.
