Statement on AI in Student Writing

Statement from the Faculty Writing Committee

As noted in the Faculty Writing Committee’s Statement on Artificial Intelligence in Writing Flag Classes, writing is a process of communication between human subjects, with social and emotional components, and thus cannot be taught by AI. AI tools are not replacements for the essential instructional work of reading students’ writing and offering revision-oriented feedback, and should not be used as such. All Writing Flag classes must offer students grades and revision-oriented feedback from a human reader (the instructor or graduate TA). Even in classes without the Writing Flag, AI may not be substituted for the instructor’s expert feedback and assessment of student writing.
