Suicide, Substance Abuse, and Alcohol Consumption: A Global View

Justin Ahamed

There are not many ways to prevent death, but one way is through suicide prevention. Suicide is preventable, yet it ranks among the highest in the leading causes of death. In this paper, I argue that suicide mortality increases as alcohol consumption and prevalence of substance use disorders increases. I test this by analyzing the the effects of alcohol consumption and prevalence of substance use disorder on suicide through a global lens. The contribution of this paper would be to provide further justification for adjusting policy for government health systems to develop targeted suicide prevention programs based on available data.
