Position Description & Qualifications

The TrIG mentor position offers exceptional students the opportunity to be both leaders on campus and mentors to new students. Mentors are committed to helping their TrIG students adjust to life and the level of academic rigor at The University of Texas at Austin.

In addition to leading seminars (meeting no more than one hour, once a week), mentors organize study groups, meet one-on-one or in small groups with their TrIG students, plan social activities and Austin-area outings, and participate in campus events. The time spent mentoring and preparing for seminar varies but usually averages around three to four hours per week.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate students with a desire to help new transfer students.
  • Provide evidence of United States employability. (Required)
  • Able to effectively communicate with TrIG students, their facilitators, faculty, and the Transfer-Year Experience program staff.
  • Comfortable with public speaking, effective in time management, organized, self-disciplined, and able to relate to people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 2.50 going into the spring 2025 semester.

Mentor Training Requirement

All TrIG mentors must enroll in the mentor training series. Students must demonstrate their knowledge of the topics presented in the training before mentoring in the fall semester.
