As an intern with Medic Outpost, Patients, Practioners & Cultures of Care BDP Student Joyce Zhuang, helped design a first-aid curriculum tailored to the unique needs and resources of rural African tribes.

Where did you intern? 

I interned with the Medic Outpost in Nairobi, Kenya. 

How did you find this internship? 

I found Medic Outpost through a Google search. 

What kind of work did you do as an intern? 

I helped design a first-aid curriculum tailored to the unique needs and resources of rural African tribes. I concluded my internship by visiting Nairobi to teach my curriculum to a pilot class of Community Health Volunteers in the Maasai tribe. 

What was the most rewarding aspect of your Connecting Experience? 

The most rewarding aspect of my Connecting Experience was visiting Kenya, where I was able to meet locals, experience a new culture, and connect with healthcare professionals on the other side of the planet. 

In what ways has this Connecting Experience shaped your plans for the future? 

This experience solidified my plans to pursue medicine, but it also sparked a new and keen interest in sustainable healthcare development abroad.
