As an Ethics & Leadership in Law, Politics & Government BDP Student, Rachel Schick observed the evolution of the romance languages and gendered vocabulary to explore the efficacy of language activism.

"I was able to expand my knowledge of progressive activism surrounding queer and women's rights, and explore further avenues of progress through my own research methodology.”

What is the title of your research project?

Linguistic Activism: Impacts of Feminist Language Planning in Postwar Europe

How would you describe your research project and how did you come up with the idea?

My project observes the evolution of the romance languages, with a focus on the construct of gender. These languages are often both grammatically and lexically engrained with exclusively masculine and feminine gender forms, linguistically excluding those outside this binary. My project explores the efficacy of language activism in promoting equality for women and non-binary individuals within Europe. The idea was inspired through my time studying abroad in Rome and my Italian coursework.

What was the most rewarding aspect of your Connecting Experience?

The most rewarding aspect of this connecting experience was that it allowed me to explore a topic of personal relevance and interest in great depth. I was able to expand my knowledge of progressive activism surrounding queer and women's rights, further exploring avenues of progress through my own research methodology. My project allowed me to apply the interdisciplinary elements of my BDP certificate and coursework in my personal work within the realm of law, politics, and government.

In what ways has this Connecting Experience shaped your plans for the future?

Completing this connecting experience strongly affirmed my interest in pursuing research-based careers in the fields of foreign politics and governmental relations. I found that I am very passionate about projects that are rooted in social justice, human rights, and transnational means of cooperation and progress. The skills I have learned throughout the completion of this project will better contribute to my success in these areas and bolster my contributions and quality of work within these professional spaces.

Please discuss the relationship that you had with your faculty mentor(s), and how they helped you during this Connecting Experience.

I cannot thank my faculty mentor, Dr. Michael Anderson, enough for his continued support and guidance throughout my time completing this project. He was available to meet regularly, giving constant support and advice concerning the direction of my project. Dr. Anderson's expertise and feedback has been instrumental into shaping my work and encouraging my interests in these fields.
